Orthodontist Emergency Care

Occasionally, some patients will experience an injury to the mouth during treatment. Dental emergencies while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances generally fall into two categories.

Orthodontic Emergencies

During orthodontic treatment, it’s not uncommon for appliances to occasionally become loose or cause irritation. If you experience any issues such as a loose bracket, broken wire, or discomfort from your braces or aligners, please contact Troy City Orthodontics during office hours to schedule an appointment.

To ensure we can provide the best care for all patients, we’re unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits. However, here are a few simple steps you can take at home until we’re able to see you:

  • Irritating wire: Cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the wire using a soft tool like a pencil eraser or cotton swab.
  • Loose bracket or band: Leave it in place and call our office so we can schedule a repair.
  • Poking or broken wire: You may carefully adjust it with a pencil eraser or trim it with clean nail clippers if necessary. If discomfort continues, please contact us.

Dental Injuries

If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you’re currently in orthodontic treatment, apply ice to the area right away and contact your general dentist as soon as possible.

Your dentist is best equipped to evaluate injuries such as chipped, displaced, or knocked-out teeth and may take X-rays to assess the situation. Once your dentist has addressed the injury, our team can then adjust or repair any orthodontic appliances if needed.

After-Hours Emergencies

If you are experiencing significant discomfort or an urgent issue outside of office hours, please contact our office. Instructions will be provided on how to reach the appropriate provider for assistance.

At Troy City Orthodontics, your comfort and safety are always our priority, and we’re here to support you every step of your treatment.
